The former engine shed provides a fitting setting for locomotives and
rolling stock. Get close up to a replica of Novelty, which ran in the
famous 1829 Rainhill Trials. Nearby is the Beyer-Garratt articulated
steam locomotive, the largest exhibit in the Power Hall. Made at Beyer,
Peacock's Gorton factory in 1930, this Garratt ran on the South African
Railways until 1972. From 1854 to 1966, Beyer, Peacock & Co. built
locomotives that were exported to many parts of the world. The musuem is located in the city centre which makes getting to it a breeze. It is actually in the oldest passenger railway buildings in the world and exhibits tells the story of the history, science and industry of Manchester - the world's first industrial city.

do have special exhibitions which usually have an entry charge but the
rest of the museum is free which is great as there is loads to see. The Museum is open from 10.00 am - 5.00 pm every day, except 24, 25, 26 December. The Restaurant is open from 10.30am to 4.30pm every day. Hot meals are served until 2.30pm. The Collections Centre is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00am to 4.30pm. They have a restuarant and all the usual facilities which make it a great day out for anyone with children. Photography is permitted in the Main Museum, provided it is not used
for commercial purposes. Site Guide Site Guides are available free of charge in English, Italiian, Spanish, German, French, Urdu, Bengali and Chinese. Literature in large print is also available upon request.
